Ingrown Toenail Surgery

About Ingrown Toenail Surgery

An ingrown toenail is caused when a curved nail grows into the skin, generally along the sides of the nail. The nail can dig into the skin causing irritation, pain, redness, swelling and warmth of the toe. If the skin breaks, bacteria can grow causing an infection which can result in drainage and odor. An ingrown toenail can develop as a result of heredity, trauma, improper trimming, poor fitting shoe wear, and fungal infection. Over-the-counter medications are ineffective and can mask the pain, while not correcting the underlying problem.
